Guarneri Classical Violin

This violin is copied after Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu in his middle period, when his work was  careful and showed the influence of Stradivari.  The arching is full and gives a warm, dark sound without the scratchy hiss so common in new violins.  Price $3,500

The violin pictured above has an antiqued brown oil varnish over a golden ground

This violin is owned by a player in the first violin section of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.  It has a bit more red in the varnish topcoats, and less antiqueing.

I also do repair on violin family instruments.  Here is the top of a violin by Johannes Thir, 1756, of Vienna.  Let's hope yours does not look like this!  Obviously a full restoration was required.
