Viola

This is a 16 1/4" viola  copied after an old Hungarian instrument that came through my shop.  The reason I like it is because of the extra width in the lower bout [much more than a Stradivari or Amati] that gives the surface area and flexibility needed for a big sound.  Yet the rounded upper bout lets the player shift into the upper positions without difficulty.  A great design.  I have two of these in the Asheville Symphony and one in the Knoxville Symphony.  Price $3,500
